?Man in Moon? created by asteroid impact the size of Austria

The "Man in the Moon" may have been created by a giant asteroid (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science??The famous flattened image across the surface of the moon, long dubbed the "Man in the Moon," appears to have been created by a giant asteroid the size of Austria.

A new study published in the British journal Nature Geoscience says the flattened, 1,800-mile-wide section of the moon's Procellarum basin was caused after the large asteroid crashed into the moon's surface.

"The nearside and farside of the Moon are compositionally distinct," reads the introduction to the study. "The detection of low-calcium pyroxene around large impact basins suggests that the huge Procellarum basin on the nearside may be an ancient impact structure and a relic scar of the violent collision that produced the lunar dichotomy."

Scientists at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology studied the distribution of minerals on the moon's surface using data collected by Japanese moon exploration orbiters, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

The size of the asteroid is estimated to have been 180 miles in diameter, hitting the moon's surface 3.9 billion years ago.

"The latest study explains why the moon's two sides are so different," said Junichi Watanabe, a professor of astronomy at the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. "It helps unravel the mystery of the moon's history."

4 Productivity Tools to Efficiently Run Your Business | earningdiary ...

Productivity Tools for businessRunning a business entails a lot of work, and having the right business efficiency tools to take care of some of your back-office operations can free up your timetable quite a bit. This way, you can focus your time and attention on things that are more important. Choosing the right tools doesn?t have to be a difficult exercise, especially once you?re made aware that there are effective but free or cheap tools like the ones below that work as good as their expensive counterparts:

1. Bitrix24.com

Productivity tools are essential for a business to thrive, especially in this cut-throat business environment. But having to purchase them individually can mean a big dent in your operating budget. An all-in-one tool that can practically save you a good chunk of money sounds just about the thing you would need, more so if you?re just starting out.

Bitrix24.com, a social intranet application that?s totally free for companies with a maximum of 12 employees, comes loaded with several business tools in one platform ? social intranet, a fully functional CRM, project management, activity planner, calendar, workforce monitoring, file and document sharing, just to name a few. Bitrix24, cloud-based as it is, can be accessed anywhere and anytime via your computer or smartphone. For companies with more than 12 staff members, Bitrix24 offers a subscription package for unlimited users that starts at $99 per month.

2. JetRadar.com

Even when your business is still small, business travel may be required. When those instances arise, it pays to know that budget airlines and online ticketing sites have made air travel significantly more affordable than it was, say, a decade ago. The downside, however, you would have to scan multiple sites to find the best and cheapest deals. Fierce competition has forced some airlines to shut down, and those that still remain are no longer pitching their promos to price-comparison sites, which, in turn, prompts consumers to check out multiple websites.

Absolutely free, JetRadar.com is a metasearch engine that pores through hundreds of flight and airline sites for the best and cheapest plane fare promos, and makes the gathered data easily accessible by practically anyone in a single website, drastically limiting the time and energy it takes to find and book the most economically attractive airfare deal. JetRadar offers hotel and accommodation listings, too.

3. Comindware.com

Automation has changed the business landscape forever. Through automation, businesses save on costs, streamline their operations and maximize the resources they?ve got on hand ? manpower, equipment and infrastructure.

Designed specifically for cross-functional teams and workgroups, Comindware.com is a software innovation that automates workflow processes, tracking of issues and task management. Comindware?s Workflow Builder capability allows even those without previous IT or designing experience to visually create and/or edit workflow processes by simply dragging and dropping items in the dashboard. And with ElasticData, the technology the application is built upon, you can design and create your workflow process now and edit it later (if needed) without having to stop or interrupt ongoing workflow processes. Within minutes, you may already deploy your newly created/edited workflow process.

If you wish to witness for yourself how Comindware would fare in your own unique environment, it is available for download for free for 30 days. And when you deem it the necessary automation tool for your company?s needs, attractive discount rates are offered.

4. PickyDomains.com

In a marketplace peppered with hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of similar products and services, a new business should make a resounding entrance to make heads turn. That starts with having a business, product, service or website name that?s unique and catchy, relevant and easy to remember. If you have no problem coming up with a name that?s all of the above, good for you. Otherwise, you might have to sit down with a friend or partner for a brainstorming session. If that still doesn?t work, branding agencies can take the burden off you, but for a price that can mean up to thousands of dollars.

An online naming platform that has been in business since 2007, PickyDomains already has a strong base of more than 50,000 registered contributors from different regions of the world. For a minimal amount of $50 for a name/domain or $75 for a slogan, you can already start receiving suggestions. Simply register with the site as a client, pay the downpayment (which depends on the service you signed up for) and send in your naming guidelines. If none of the suggestions you receive fits, you can always ask for your money back.

NOPD nabs Hollygrove shooting suspect | NOLA.com

The NOPD on Wednesday arrested an 18-year-old who is accused of shooting a man in the shoulder during a drive-by in Hollygrove on Monday, police said. Robashi Holmes turned himself in to New Orleans police and was booked into Orleans Parish Prison about 7 p.m. on a count of aggravated battery, records show.

Holmes was identified as the gunman by his alleged accomplice, Ken D. Dooley, 20, who was caught by police after both he and Holmes allegedly jumped out of a dark vehicle near the crime scene Monday night to flee from police officers.

NOPD officers responding to the scene of the shooting at the corner of Gen. Ogden and Olive streets on Monday about 10:15 p.m. saw a dark vehicle without its headlights on speeding away, and pursued it. The occupants of the car, which was reported stolen from the 1200 block of Joliet Street, bailed from the vehicle at the intersection of Colapissa and Mistletoe streets. Police said they caught Dooley after a brief foot chase.

Officers say Dooley identified Holmes as the shooter on Gen. Ogden and Olive. While officers were interviewing Dooley, a key to the Lexus stolen from Willow Street fell out of his pocket, police said. The carjacking victim subsequently picked Dooley as the robber from a photographic lineup, an incident report notes.

Meanwhile, police say they have obtained an arrest warrant for Holmes, who coincidentally was shot aboard an RTA bus on July 12 at the intersection of Carrollton Avenue and Palmetto Street.

Sundiata Bilal Simba, Truck Driver, Steals And Sells 1,500 Cases Of Beer

Truck drivers carry precious cargo every day. So precious, in fact, that sometimes they take that cargo into their own hands.

Truck driver Sundiata Bilal Simba, 52, was assigned to transport some 1,500 cases of Budweiser beer from Houston to Corpus Christi, Texas. When the shipment never arrived, Simba?s boss grew concerned, The Houston Chronicle reports. At first, Simba claimed the freightliner had broken down, then he admitted that he had sold the beer ?because he needed the money."

Less than a week later, police responded to reports of beer being sold from rental trailers at a Northeast Houston residence. Police were also able to match bar codes linking Simba?s shipment to the beer being sold, the Associated Press reports.

Simba, who had only been working for the shipping line Nuks for a month, isn?t the first trucker driver to go rogue. In August, truck driver Paul Reyes confessed to stealing various electronics, clothing items and other merchandise over a period of years, valued at roughly $32,000, KXXV reports. Other?s crimes are less benign. Armored truck driver Kenneth Konias Jr was charged this year with killing his partner and then stealing around $2 million in cash from the vehicle he?d been driving.

But the fact that Simba chose to steal beer at all may have something to do with its increased prevalence along shipment lines. Beer shipments are back up for the first time since 2008, The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month.

P.S. If you're worried about your personal beer budget, blame taxes. A lot of taxes.

Who is responsible? | The daily meanderings of a teacher

Bird Droppings October 25, 2012

Who is responsible?

?

Here in Georgia we have on the ballot an amendment to the State Constitution to provide for a new State Board for Charter Schools. This board is such that it would lie outside local support department of education authority and be appointed by the Governor. Most of the funding is coming from the private sector and companies wanting to get into the education process in Georgia. I researched several of these companies and found foreign investors, massive fraud cases in one instance fifty schools run by a Virginia company in Florida involved in money laundering among other situations and the one that really caught my eye teachers are paid less this is how we can become more efficient. Sadly too many voters in Georgia are unaware of what is entailed in this ballot measure and it most likely will pass. It is not a yes or no as indicated for Charter schools it is a yes or no for local control.

Several weeks ago I was involved in a debate of sorts on the issue of public versus private education; it circled around and about really going not too far. Yesterday I picked up our local paper and a letter to the editor caught my attention. It was a blast at public education locally and how we were not growing and how we did not need a school bond for new schools and how some of the thirty to forty year old buildings were good enough in their day and were still good enough. There was no growth and why should we not be putting money into operating costs and not buildings.

Then the writer extolled the home schoolers who sought better education and also private schools where students received better educations. No Child Left Behind even was mentioned and how students from our county could go to another county from schools who did not meet the standards. All over not wanting a school bond past. It was just a few years ago you could drive around our county and see thousands of homes, literally thousands going up all which eventually have families in them with children who go to school. Our high school has literally split forming two high schools in the past few years. When I started teaching twelve years ago we had maybe fourteen hundred students we have more than that now and another high school filled with twelve hundred more students that would have been here.

In so many parts of the country people take attitudes similar to this person who wrote in to the local paper and school systems then have problems. But as the individual pointed out it is up to the public, up to the voters who elect school board members and pass bond issues. The responsibility is in the hands of the people. Another comment was made about curriculum and how school boards made decisions without community support. Our school board meetings in general are public and open for community involvement and our current superintendent is even having public forums for parents to give their views and to hear directly from parents and the community. Responsibility is a big word. Texas and Kansas popped up as represented of curriculum issues. The plan offered in these states was to do away with critical thinking and real science in favor of religious based notions.

?

?A society which makes provision for participation in its good of all its members on equal terms and which secures flexible readjustment of its institutions through interaction of the different forms of associated life is in so far democratic. Such a society must have a type of education which gives individuals a personal interest in social relationships and control, and the habits of mind which secure social changes without introducing disorder.? John Dewey, Democracy in Education

?

We as individuals are responsible if we choose to be and to the extent we chose to be through voting and through communication with elected officials in all levels of government and society. How is responsibility defined? I quickly typed the word into my faithful computer and Dictionary.com came to the rescue.

?

?The social force that binds you to your obligations and the courses of action demanded by that force;? Dictionary.com

?

Responsibility is a social entity a ?force that binds?. Being a part of a social group of society then implies responsibility to an extent, rules and parameters that exist to protect us from each other. It could be the guidelines and structures that give direction, perhaps in a way we are guided too much some might say.

?

?I am responsible. Although I may not be able to prevent the worst from happening, I am responsible for my attitude toward the inevitable misfortunes that darken life. Bad things do happen; how I respond to them defines my character and the quality of my life. I can choose to sit in perpetual sadness, immobilized by the gravity of my loss, or I can choose to rise from the pain and treasure the most precious gift I have ? life itself.?? Walter Anderson

?

Often as I research an idea early in the morning through books and the internet I find coincidences and several years ago as I found this quote by Walter Anderson, it was one of those. Walter Anderson the writer and editor of Parade magazine interviewed and discussed with leading figures around the world. His book Courage is a three letter word, has been an inspiration to many dealing with anxiety and fear. But as I searched I also found another Walter Anderson in the bayous of Mississippi a painter and artist that is worth throwing out who also in his art dealt with anxieties and fear of his own making. He was periodically institutionalized for schizophrenia and other mental issues. Walter Inglis Anderson painted with a passion not unlike Van Gogh. So teachers if you need a good reference source when looking at American artists check this fellow out. In the end as I read the sentence on responsibility it could have been from either the author or the painter ?I am responsible? and it is we citizens who need to face up to that.

?

?We must reject the idea that every time a law?s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.? Ronald Reagan

?

?I believe that every right implies a responsibility; every opportunity an obligation; every possession, a duty.? John D. Rockefeller

?

One of my former students was an advocate of anarchy, always wearing the popular rock logo on his wrist bands and all over his books notebooks and even his skateboard. When talking with him about the concept he would always go in a circle, what if we did have anarchy and you were only responsible for yourself doing whatever you wanted. As I thought I could see where youthful idealism could manifest itself in such a philosophy. But what if, where do you stop in a society, where there are no boundaries and soon it is whoever is strongest and most powerful is in control and you have a dictatorship. Usually he would back out of the discussion when it left him by himself. He wanted freedom and no one else really mattered. In effect he did not want responsibility.

?

?Man must cease attributing his problems to his environment, and learn again to exercise his will ? his personal responsibility.? Albert Schweitzer

?

?The salvation of mankind lies only in making everything the concern of all.? Alexander Solzhenitsyn

?

As I read and think this morning it is not so much going back to that starting letter to the editor about accepting responsibility, it is that too many people do not want to be involved. They do not want the responsibility of choosing, of interacting, or of involvement. That letter mentioned the growth of home schooling and private schools. I found when I moved to Georgia in 1972 public schools were in peril in some communities students were leaving in droves. It was not because of quality of education but because of desegregation. Many white students did not want to go to school with other ethnic groups. This election shows that this issue has not gone away.

Today while that is still an issue so often it is hidden within the pretext of religion as so many schools are billed as ?Christian? schools. Many home schoolers are home schooling because of religious reasons and the idea that public schools are to secular and much too public. I find it interesting no one ever says they are too science driven.

?

?What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think. This rule, equally arduous in actual and intellectual life, may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder, because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world?s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great person is one who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.? Ralph Waldo Emerson

?

I always seem to be seeking a monastic life in the midst of society. It is up to us in the end we are who responsibility falls too. Be it about education and or the zoning of a piece of property. But it requires involvement and it requires thought. So it is a new week ahead and so much happening on the world front and locally. So today please keep all in harm?s way on your minds and in your hearts and to always give thanks namaste.

Guatemala, Mexico win futsal friendlies

From concacaf.com | Originally published 22/10/2012 | 50 views

Guatemala and Mexico posted victories in road friendlies over the weekend during its preparations for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand.

The visiting Guatemalans, who have played the most internationals of any CONCACAF team over the last four years, swept Malaysia in a two-game series played at the Panasonic Sports Complex in the city of Shah Alam (located 16 miles west of Kuala Lumpur).

In Friday?s opener, Edgar Ernesto Santizo scored twice, while Allan Josue Aguilar, Manuel Aristondo, Jaime Estuardo De Leon, Jose Rafael Gonzalez, Billy Joel Pineda and Miguel Angel Santizo contributed a goal apiece in an 8-2 win for the?Chapines.

The eight goals were the most by a CONCACAF side against an Asian team in a futsal game since the United States blanked host Hong Kong, 6-0, just before the start of the 1992 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

Guatemala ? one of only three CONCACAF teams to win a futsal match on Asian soil ? closed out the brief tour on Saturday with a 4-3 triumph. The winner got two goals from Humberto Armando Escobar, plus single tallies from De Leon and Walter Alejandro Enriquez.

Elsewhere, on Sunday, Mexico earned its first victory during its trip to Spain by defeating local first division club Inter Movistar FS, 2-1, at the Pabell?n Polideportivo Caja Madrid in Alcal? de Henares.

The?Tricolores?jumped out to a 2-0 lead over the eight-time LNFS (Spanish Futsal League) champion thanks to first half goals from Jose Omar Cervantes and Jorge Alberto Rodriguez.

Despite playing without three key players called into the Spanish side for the Futsal World Cup (GK-Juanjo, DF-Ort?z, MD-?lvaro), Inter Movistar got on the board with a tally from Diego Armando with two minutes left on the clock.

This week, Ramon Raya?s squad will face Navagalamella FS (Oct. 22), Escuela Javier Limones FS (Oct. 23) and Brihuega FS (Oct. 24).

The?Tricolores?will compete in their first Futsal World Cup next month and are in Group D with Argentina, Australia and Italy.? Guatemala, which is playing in its third FIFA event, will meet Colombia, Russia and Solomon Islands in Group F play.

Foreign fighters boosting Syrian rebels raise concerns over al-Qaida ties

ALEPPO, Syria (AP) ? The presence of foreign Islamic militants battling Syria's regime is raising concerns over the possible injection of al-Qaida's influence into the country's civil war.

Syria's rebels share some of those misgivings. But they also see in the foreign extremists a welcome boost: experienced, disciplined fighters whose battlefield valor against the better-armed troops of President Bashar Assad is legendary.

Nothing typifies the dilemma more than Jabhat al-Nusra, a shadowy group with an al-Qaida-style ideology whose fighters come from Libya, Tunisia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, the Balkans and elsewhere. Many are veterans of previous wars who came to Syria for what they consider a new "jihad" against Assad.

The group has become notorious for numerous suicide bombings during the 19-month-old conflict targeting regime and military facilities. Syria's rebels have tried to disassociate themselves from the bombings for fear their uprising will be tainted with the al-Qaida brand.

But several hundred fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra ? Arabic for "the Support Front" ? have also been a valued addition to rebel ranks in the grueling, three-month battle for control of Aleppo, Syria's largest city.

Their reputation in battle circulates among Aleppo's rebels like an urban legend. Soon after opposition forces launched their assault on the city in July, government troops almost drove them out of the key district of Salaheddin ? until 40 Jabhat al-Nusra fighters rushed to the front and fended them off, according to a story told by many rebels.

The group's fighters have played a similar role along the multitude of front lines that divide this city of 3 million people, where regime forces and rebels have been at a standstill, fighting street to street but unable to score a decisive victory. Many rebels talk of the al-Nusra fighters' prowess as snipers.

"They rush to the rescue of rebel lines that come under pressure and hold them," one rebel said. "They know what they are doing and are very disciplined. They are like the special forces of Aleppo."

But he added: "The only thing is that they are too radical." He spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals by both Jabhat al-Nusra and the Assad regime.

In a statement posted on militant websites Wednesday, Jabhat al-Nusra rejected a proposed cease-fire during the four-day Muslim Eid al-Adha holiday, which starts Friday. International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has been trying to cobble together such a truce, saying the government in Damascus and some rebels have agreed to the idea.

But Jabhat al-Nusra called a truce a "filthy game," saying it has no faith that Assad's regime would respect one. Some Syrian rebel leaders have also expressed skepticism, since previous cease-fire attempts have gone nowhere.

Jabhat al-Nusra is the largest grouping of foreign jihadis in Syria, and the rebels say they number about 300 fighters in Aleppo, as well as branches in neighboring Idlib province, the city of Homs and the capital Damascus. Any direct links to al-Qaida are unclear, although U.S. and Iraqi officials have said they believe members of al-Qaida's branch in Iraq have crossed the border to join the fight against Assad.

There are no reliable figures for the number of foreign fighters in Syria, although available estimates put the number in the hundreds, rather than the thousands.

Many al-Nusra fighters wear long tunics and baggy pants in the style of mujahedeen or "holy warriors" in Afghanistan, and nearly all have beards, a hallmark of religious piety. A few smear kohl on their eyes and have long hair, emulating what they believe is a style favored by Islam's Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century.

The fighters keep a low profile. They have turned a government building in Aleppo into their headquarters, but it is barely noticeable since it contains no banners or flags to give it away. Only occasional graffiti announces their presence in the city: "Jabhat al-Nusra is coming." Rebels who spoke with The Associated Press about the group had no clear idea about its leadership.

The fighters shun the media, but information gleaned from Syrians in contact with them paints a picture of militant Muslims motivated by a jihadi ideology not unlike that of al-Qaida. Their members include propagandists, trainers, surgeons and other medical doctors.

Many Syrian rebels are themselves pious Muslims who frame the fight against Assad's regime in a religious context. But some see the jihadis' brand of Islam as too starkly black-and-white and intolerant, dividing the world between the faithful and the infidels. Their presence, some fear, casts doubts on whether a post-Assad Syria will embrace democratic values or come under the sway of Islamists.

A staffer at a field hospital in a rebel-held part of Aleppo, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals for talking about the group, said the al-Nusra fighters "are fine now, because they are fighting alongside the rebels."

An AP team witnessed some of the frictions at the field hospital in mid-October. Several al-Nusra fighters entered, and one of them ? a tall, lanky non-Arab dressed in black with a black headband ? was enraged by the presence of foreign journalists at the facility.

"They are all spies who are here to collect information," he said in English, shaking the automatic rifle that was slung over his shoulder.

Another fighter, who appeared to be of North African origin, tried to force a female photographer to leave the hospital after she attempted to photograph the X-ray of a wounded fighter's head.

A Syrian rebel commander confronted the two men.

"There is nothing in Islam that permits you to treat guests like this. Furthermore, it is a woman," he said. The fighters left and the commander offered tea and dates to the photographer and several other journalists.

Opposition members also worry that the presence of foreign jihadis in Syria lends credibility to the regime's repeated assertions that the rebellion is the work of terrorist groups carrying out a "foreign conspiracy."

Jabhat al-Nusra has claimed responsibility for a string of suicide bombings, including several in Damascus. It unleashed an Oct. 3 suicide blast in Aleppo that killed more than 30 people, targeting a square where pro-regime fighters congregated. After each blast, the rebels' Free Syrian Army umbrella group underlines that it does not approve of suicide bombings as a tactic.

"Their presence is reducing the popular support that we desperately need in areas where we operate," a senior political official of the Free Syrian Army, said in neighboring Turkey. "I appreciate their motives for coming to Syria. We cannot deny Muslims their right to jihad, but we want them to leave." He spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss concerns over the group.

Still, in Aleppo, the image of pious Islamic warriors coming to help in the fight against Assad is an attractive one. Though Jabhat al-Nusra is predominantly made up of foreigners, a few Syrians have joined, mostly ultraconservative Muslims.

Syrians can join only if they are backed by two full members who must swear on the Quran to tell the truth about the applicant. The fighters run training programs for their Syrian members as well as others who want to learn fighting skills but don't want to join the group.

The high esteem in which the Jabhat al-Nusra fighters are held has a great deal to do with the unruly behavior and lack of discipline of many rebels.

One recent night, al-Nusra fighters brought the bodies of four Syrian rebels who were killed when a fellow rebel they were interrogating over suspicion that he was stealing grabbed an assault rifle and shot them. A fifth rebel was wounded.

Later, when comrades of the four dead heard the news they gathered outside the hospital and, enraged, fired their entire bullet magazines into the air. Another group of fighters reacted similarly when struck by grief over the death of a comrade.

Residents of Aleppo also complain that some rebels take unfair advantage of their position.

Fighters go straight to the front of the line at bakeries to buy bread when residents have to wait hours for their turn. Some demand that wounded comrades be treated ahead of civilians at the field hospital.

"I don't have time to wait in line," said a 19-year-old army deserter who joined the rebels in Aleppo and gave only his first name, Hani.

Halloween will soon be upon us this year and the Ocean City Police ...

The Ocean City Police Department recommends these simple tips for a safe Halloween:

  • Plan a safe way home before the festivities begin.
  • Before drinking, designate a sober driver.
  • If you?re impaired, take a taxi, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.
  • If you happen to see a drunk driver on the road, don?t hesitate to contact local law enforcement.
  • And remember, Friends Don?t Let Friends Drive Drunk. If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take their keys and help them make other arrangements to get to where they are going safely.

The United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention suggests the following:

Going trick-or-treating?

Swords, knives, and similar costume accessories should be short, soft, and flexible.

Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult.

Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you.

E

Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat.

? ?
H

Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always WALK and don?t run from house to house.

Always test make-up in a small area first. Remove it before bedtime to prevent possible skin and eye irritation.

Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible.

Only walk on sidewalks whenever possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe.

Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls.

E

?

Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers.

Enter homes only if you?re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don?t stop at dark houses. Never accept rides from strangers.

Never walk near lit candles or luminaries. Be sure to wear flame-resistant costumes.

?

?Expecting trick-or-treaters or party guests?

  • Provide healthier treats for trick-or-treaters such as low-calorie treats and drinks. For party guests, offer a variety of fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.
  • Use party games and trick-or-treat time as an opportunity for kids to get their daily dose of 60 minutes of physical activity.
  • Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls.
  • Keep candle-lit jack o?lanterns and luminaries away from doorsteps, walkways, landings, and curtains. Place them on sturdy tables, keep them out of the reach of pets and small children, and never leave them unattended.
  • Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely.

Follow these tips to help make the festivities fun and safe for everyone!

Baltimore Tourism Group Backs Expanded Gambling ? CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE?(WJZ) ? Time is ticking on the upcoming election and the clock is running out to sway voters on expanding gambling in Maryland.

Now, as Gigi Barnett reports, the referendum to bring table games to the state is getting support from the tourism industry.

Supporters say more gambling means more visitors to Baltimore.

?I think it will be a good thing for the state of Maryland,? said one ad.

?The big losers are Maryland taxpayers,? counters a different ad.

Whether for or against Question 7 on the upcoming ballot, voters are a little more than two weeks away from hitting the polls. Television ads worth millions are overtaking the airwaves. It?s in this time crunch that one group for expanded gambling in the city is backing Question 7.

Related Story: Voters In RI, Ore., Md. To Vote On Casinos

?Harrah?s and Caesar?s are going to come to town,? said Tom Noonan. ?They?ve got 40 million card-carrying members that they go out and market, they?re going to go out and market Baltimore as a new destination for them, and people will come to town.?

Tom Noonan runs Visit Baltimore, the city?s main tourism arm. He says bigger games mean more visitors to Baltimore and greater job numbers.

?People will come to town and stay in hotel rooms and obviously go gambling and use restaurants. For us, it?s all about growing the tourism industry,? Noonan said.

And where the city is planning to build its new casino makes a big difference, according to Noonan. It?s set to sit right next to M&T Bank Stadium and Oriole Park.

?That?s a great one-two punch together. People are coming 91 nights out of the year for either baseball or football games. They?ll have the opportunity to go right over to the casino and come back,? said Noonan.

That may be a sweet deal for gamblers, but for some voters, a new casino on Russell Street only poses a traffic tie-up.

?Whatever is going on between football and baseball, and you?re going to clutter it up with 3,000 more people a night. It?s just going to be a mess,? said voter Harry Kunze.

If Question 7 is approved by voters, Baltimore?s planned two-story casino would offer more than 3,700 slots to visitors.

Kevin McLaughlin, spokesman for ?Get The Facts: Vote No On Question 7? sent WJZ?this statement: ?Baltimore developers have sold the people of Maryland a bill of goods. Question 7 is a great deal for multimillionaire casino owners, but a bad deal for Baltimore taxpayers.?

3 Great Ways to Lower Energy Costs With Alternative Energy

?

A large number of homeowners are unable to grapple with the rising energy costs. Over 85% of the energy used in the world is from non-renewable resources. Remember, ?Time?s winged chariot hurrying near,? as all the non-renewable resources may deplete in near future. Therefore, it may compel us to rely only on the renewable sources. Recently, people all over the globe are relying on alternative energy sources. These alternative energy sources are inexhaustible resources and they can help to reduce the long-term energy costs for homeowners. There are various alternative renewable sources available for the homeowners; but there are a few that may not be practical to use for all homes.

Here are a few alternative energy resources to?lower the energy consumption costs?:

1. Solar energy: Solar energy is considered to be the most common types of alternative energy. Without any noise and air pollution, the solar panels are used to convert the sunlight into electric system. This is a system when you can utilize the renewable energy coming from the sunlight. Therefore, it is considered to be environment friendly than conventional energy sources. You can use the solar electric system to power light, electrical appliances used in your kitchen as well as computers and other electric devices. However, installing solar electric system in your home can be little expensive. In some of the states in the US, the government offers tax deduction and other financial incentives to make the solar electric system more affordable for home owners.

2. Wind Energy: Wind is also a renewable form of energy that does not cause environmental hazards. Although, it may not be practical to use wind energy source to generate power for a home. The turbines are used to convert kinetic energy from the wind into electricity. The aerodynamic blades in the turbines are used to convert kinetic energy and control the maximum amount of energy from the wind. When the blades are turned with the help of wind, the shaft connected to the generator starts spinning. This generator helps to power you home. If you do not have a large open area adjacent to your home, then it may not be possible to install a wind turbine. Try to analyze whether you can afford to install a wind turbine as it can burn a hole in your pocket. Remember, many homeowners may not be able to manage the long-term investment that is required.

3. Hydro Power: If your home is near to a river or stream, then hydro power is an alternative energy option. Hydro power is also a renewable source of energy. Unlike other alternative sources of energy, the hydro energy power is commonly used to power homes. The river or stream from where the power is generated needs to have high flow. In this source of energy, a micro hydro turbine is used to capture the water?s energy. The most positive point of a hydro power is that the turbines can produce energy continuously.

Therefore, these are the common three alternative energy resources used to cut on energy costs.

Softbank of Japan to buy 70 pct of Sprint for $20.1B shot in the arm for struggling No. 3

Star Tribune Monday 15th October, 2012

TOKYO - Japan's Softbank has agreed to buy 70 percent of Sprint for $20.1 billion, giving the struggling U.S. cellphone company an infusion of cash and confidence. The deal, announced Monday in Tokyo, positions Overland Park, Kan.-based Sprint Nextel Corp. as a stronger competitor to market leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T, but it doesn't solve some of the company's underlying problems. Softbank Corp. is the No. 3 cellphone company in Japan, ...

Xbox Music to offer on-demand music free on tablet

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Buyers of tablets that run Microsoft's newest operating system, Windows 8, are in for a pleasant musical surprise: They'll be able to handpick from a selection of millions of songs and stream them for free as long as they put up with an audio ad every 15 minutes.

The new service, called Xbox Music, is not on offer anywhere else at the moment.

Sweden's Spotify, for instance, allows track selection and playback on personal computers for free ? with the occasional audio ad ? but doesn't allow you to pick exactly the song you want on tablets unless you pay $10 a month for its premium subscription. Pandora's popular free online radio service also doesn't let you pick specific tracks.

Although this is a step forward for the music industry, its appeal is limited by the expense of most mobile data plans. Most cost more the more data you use, which can make streaming music on cellular networks fairly expensive.

The free version of Xbox Music won't let you download songs and save them for offline playback. That will require paying $10 a month.

The paid subscription is also required if you want to use Xbox Music on the Xbox 360 game console or on smartphones that use Windows Phone. On the game console, an Xbox Live Gold membership, which costs $60 a year, is also required.

On PCs running Windows 8, Xbox Music will match Spotify's offer of free track selection and playback.

In a demonstration on Friday, Xbox Music General Manager Jerry Johnson showed how one's playlists are saved online and can be accessed when switching between the service on the Xbox 360 game console, a Windows Phone and a Windows 8 tablet.

Each iteration looked similar and had a clean interface with sharply detailed cover art. Xbox Music will be the default music player on all new Windows 8 devices, which will be available upon the launch of the new operating system on Oct. 26.

Current users of the Xbox ? about 66 million worldwide ? will gradually be introduced to the service with a 30-day free trial starting Tuesday.
